An 80th Birthday To Remember | Birthday Family Photographer in Bath UK
When Kate contacted me to photograph her and her family to celebrate her mother’s 80th birthday, I was so excited. I don’t often get to photograph older people and a grown up family so it was a wonderful new terrain to navigate.
It was a large group of about 12 and I felt very privileged to be amongst this beautifully joyful, friendly and interesting family as they celebrated their mother and grandmothers birthday. The family consisted of the grandparents, Jane and Julian, and their three daughters and their families.
The photo shoot took place in the stunning area of Pembrokeshire, South West Wales. We began the photo shoot at a beautiful beach. The beach was a little way away from the main car park, but once you got there it was well worth the hike. It was an expansive sandy beach surrounded by sand dunes and leafy cliffs. I had never been to this part of Wales before and I had no idea these spectacular beaches were there.
The beach was a wonderful back drop for a birthday family photo shoot. Everyone was able to do whatever they liked and as I moved from one bit of action to another, it created an overarching unity of a family thoroughly enjoying each other’s company and full of love and life. The youngest girls frolicked in the sea with their two dashchund dogs, the older children played a game of catch or just relaxed on the sand and the adults meandered between all their children, looking on with love, pride and satisfaction. You got the impression this family had millions of threads of love, shared moments and memories that bound them all together with this invisible rope. It’s so fascinating spending time with a family that isn’t your own. There are similarities of course but each family truly has its own vibe and it’s fascinating seeing the interaction between them.
The beach fun soon came to an end and it was time to head back to the hotel where the family were staying and where we would be having some afternoon tea and birthday cake. Once everyone had showered and reassembled one of the granddaughters brought out her spectacular cake that she had baked for her grandmother. We then waited for Jane and Julian to make their special entrance, which they did with grace and elegance and class. I am always so moved when you can see the love between an older couple that is so palpable. A love that has grown stronger and stronger over the decades and is still thriving with hope for the future.
Everyone had a gorgeous slice of cake and refreshing cup of tea and chatted away. And we ended the afternoon with a lovely and very English game of croquet.
